Drive It Day Strathendrick Rotary Classic Car Tour
Sunday 25th April 2010
Congratulations to all who took part in this year’s Strathendrick Rotary Classic Car Tour. The generous sponsorship has enabled the club to donate £1,500 each to the two main charities – End Polio Now and CHAS (Childrens Hospice Association Scotland). The balance of any funds - following receipt of Gift Aid from the Customs and Revenue – will be used for other local and national deserving causes which the Rotary Club support.
On the day of the Tour the weather could have been kinder, despite the damp grey skies everyone appeared to enjoy the fellowship of like-minded enthusiasts, meeting old friends and making new ones. As usual there was a fantastic collection of special cars from near and far – Janet Lewis and Gerry Jones received the award for the furthest travelled – all the way from Devon in an MGF. Duncan Laing and Jill Patrick also had an epic journey completing the tour in one of the oldest MG’s in Scotland – a 1929 M Series – winning the oldest car award. The superb Mercedes 280SL of Colin Coates and John Buchanan received the award for the most desirable car. Eddie and Ilene Redman won the Stirling Moss/Concours d’Elegance for their V12 E Type.
Regulars Mike and Annie Herivel, Triumph Stag, were deserving winners of the Spirit of the Tour award – despite various challenges they have taken part in every tour, travelling from the far north of Scotland. Special congratulations to Michael Lewis and Fraser Williamson in the Dutton Melos for raising the most sponsorship with the amazing total of £368. The quiz winners were David Birdsall and Rod Phillips in an Audi quattro.
Thanks to all the sponsors and marshalls without whom these events could not take place.
Plans are well underway for next year’s tour – again coinciding with “Drive It Day” This is the day owners of classic cars are encouraged to take their special vehicles out on the road to show the nation
Normally Drive it Day 2011 would have been on April 24th however to avoid Easter Sunday it has been moved a week earlier to Sunday 17th April. Mark this date in your diaries. There will be a new route for the 2011 Rotary Tour using a variety of great driving roads through scenic Argyll. Details will be released in January – we hope you can join us again.
